RF, which stands for non-ionizing radio frequency energy, is increasingly prevalent in the workplace. Accidental or uninformed exposure to RF can pose health and safety hazards. RF sources are often disguised, emphasizing the importance of hazard recognition as a vital workplace skill. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulate workplace RF exposure in the US, while Health Canada maintains RF standards in Canada. Understanding and complying with these standards is crucial for ensuring a safe working environment. In occupations such as cellular, tower climbing, and related technologies, crews without certified workers who are aware of RF are often barred from worksites. Moreover, the use of trained workers may also be an insurance requirement.

Workers may face exposure to RF while working around antennas on cell or broadcast towers. Antennas, often disguised, might not be immediately apparent to tradespeople working on roofs, signs, or street hardware. Integrated antennas in infrastructure accessed by utility crews further contribute to potential exposure. Industries employ high-power RF for semiconductor production, heat treating, baking, and welding applications. First responders may encounter RF in unfamiliar locations, including from base and mobile communications.

RF safety training is a necessity for radio technicians, radar maintainers, tower climbers, industrial maintainers, and others who work directly with RF. Others with occupations incidentally or unknowingly exposing them to RF also need RF awareness training. That might include roofers, HVAC technicians, landscaping personnel, painters, building managers, public safety/first responder personnel, and custodial staff.

LBAU RF Safety Awareness Training  Certification courses cover various topics to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding. The online RF safety training includes an introduction to industry standards such as FCC, OSHA, Canada Code 6, NEPA, and ICNIRP. It also focuses on the biological effects of RF energy, encompassing thermal and non-thermal effects, shock and burn contact, and both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. Participants learn to recognize controlled and uncontrolled areas based on maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limits, including the concept of the “six-minute rule.” The RF training emphasizes the importance of understanding RF Safety signage and proper personal protective equipment (PPE) utilization. Participants also gain knowledge on identifying RF emitters and sources, including stealth antennas and concealed hazards, while implementing safe work practices. Additionally, the online training covers unique subjects specific to the course focus.

Yes, the principles of RF safety apply universally. Different countries recognize various codes and norms, but most of them base their standards on the exposure guidelines established by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), which closely align with the standards used in the United States and Canada, which we cover extensively in our courses. In fact, many countries consider the US standards as de facto national standards. The course material not only benefits international trainees but also holds prestige in many workers’ careers as they receive the LBAU Certificate of Completion. Our online platform provides convenient access to training, payment, and credentials, making international learning a seamless experience. Currently, we offer select LBAU RF safety courses (and many others) in English, Spanish, and French.

We recommend that retraining occur annually. However, there are no formal rules besides OSHA’s general standard that requires a safe workplace and adequate training. Many contractors and employers require that Certificates of Completion date within one year. Because the RF exposure field is so broad, we suggest taking a variety of RF Awareness training courses for renewal to broaden your background in RF hazards.

If you’ve reached the daily limit of 7.5hrs, then you cannot complete any more training for the next 24 hours as you must wait for the 7.5hrs limit to go back down to 0.00hrs.

FOR EXAMPLE, if you stopped at the daily limit yesterday at 2 pm, you have to wait until 2 pm the next day to start training in the course again. If you log in at 2 pm, you’ll notice that time will go down from the daily limit (7.5 hours) and eventually back to 0.00 hours as time goes on throughout the new day.

We cannot adjust the daily limits. These are strict hours set by OSHA.

Please contact us to update your email address on file.

All courses give you 3 chances to pass each quiz and the Final Exam.

If you failed a quiz for the OSHA 10 or 30 Hour course, please follow these steps:

  1. Log into your account and click on the quiz that you failed. A pop-up box will appear where you need to submit a ticket.
  2. Once you submit that ticket, OSHA will send you an email confirming the ticket was received.
Make sure to check your Spam / Junk folder.
  3. Typically within one day, OSHA will send you a second email providing you with instructions and two choices in order to unlock the training. Call the phone number listed in the email and then choose the following options:
    • Get your last lesson re-set for one day with one chance to pass it.
    • Take a verbal quiz over the phone with an OSHA-authorized trainer.

Please contact us for immediate assistance.

If you receive your DOL card with your name spelled incorrectly, there is $25 fee for a replacement card.

To avoid any certificate issues and replacement card fees, please verify your name is correct before completing any training.

If you cannot see a student on your gradebook on the OSHA portal, contact us and we’ll correct this issue right away.

OSHA permits a maximum of 7.5 hours of training per day and allows students up to 180 days to complete the course from the date it is assigned.

  • OSHA 10 = 1.5 days total time
  • OSHA 30 = 4.5 days total time

If you complete an OSHA course earlier than the required minimum 10 or 30 hours, you will NOT meet the required training time and will need to add an extra OSHA approved course to meet the required training time. Payment is required for additional training.

If you completed the course and your certificate is blank, make sure you did both of the following:

  • Successfully passed the Final Exam.
  • Completed the End-Of-Course Survey which is required. Participants must complete the course survey to receive an OSHA DOL card and Certificate of Completion.

Once you complete the entire course, your DOL card will be released for mail and will arrive within 2 – 4 weeks.

  • You must first successfully complete the Final Exam and the End-of-Course Survey.

You are authorized to *print and use the Certificate of Completion until the DOL card arrives.
*Note: this is not allowed in the State of New York.

To request an OSHA DOL card replacement:

  1. Call Summit Training Source at 1-800-447-3177.
  2. Press 1, then press 2.
  3. Wait to speak with an OSHA 10 & 30-Hour representative who will assist you with ordering your card.

Please note there is a $25 replacement card fee.

We currently offer OSHA 10 Construction and General Industry in Spanish.

If you need OSHA 30 Construction or General Industry in Spanish, checkout these training resources from OSHA.
